Do you know that a folic acid deficiency is very common? And that the deficiency of this vitamin can cause problems in your child’s school performance? Folic acid is one of the B vitamins.

Some of the symptoms of folic acid deficiency are:

  • Anaemia (weak blood).
  • Irritability, weakness, weight loss and loss of appetite.
  • Headache, sore tongue, heart palpitations, forgetfulness.
  • Bad moods, behaviour resembling that of madness.
  • Intestinal disturbances and diarrhoea.

Some of the best sources of folic acid include:
  • Primarily green leafy vegetables (folic acid drives its name from foliage).
  • Organ meats such as liver and kidney and red dried beans.
  • Broccoli cabbage, beets, cauliflower and oranges.
  • Green peas and whole wheat bread.
  • Folic acid is vulnerable to destruction. As much as 100% can be lost in food that is over cooked, reheated, or when cooking water is discarded. Hence, do not over cook vegetables, and do not discard cooking water.

When cooking vegetables, make sure the lid is placed securely on the pot. Otherwise some vitamins will get lost with the steam.

Deficiencies of folic acid may occur if your child takes anticonvulsant, aspirin inspite of adequate intake of this vitamin.

To keep your child healthy and well, include green leafy vegetables in your family meals on a daily basis.
