THE Inspector general of police, Maj.Gen. Katumba Wamala, will be the chief runner at a fundraising for the Special Olympics team of the mentally retarded children.

Katumba is expected to lead more than 100 senior police officers in the cross-country run dubbed the Uganda Law Enforcement Torch Run (ULETR) on May 22. The proceeds will facilitate the Special Olympic team.

This will be the second time the event is being held, the first being in September 2000.
Police Spokesman, Assuman Mugenyi, yesterday said the ULETR for Special Olympics is a program whose mission is to fundraise and generate awareness for Special Olympics.

“This is achieved by members of a country’s law enforcement services participating in a cross country run while bearing the Olympic torch,” Mugenyi said.

Officers will jog from one police station in the city to the other before ending up in Namboole stadium.

Proceeds from the more than 30km run will go towards airlifting the national team to Dublin, Ireland, for the Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held in June.

The cost of transporting the team plus 10 officials is estimated at about $68,500 (about sh130m).
