CASUAL labourers who were gossiping about their landlord’s alleged night-dancing habbits turned on an innocent man who was singing the words of a popular song by Jose Chameleone, “Olugambo wobanalwo lunakutta,” meaning “If you are a rumour monger, you will die of it’s cause.”
Sempijja, a resident of Kisaasi who digs trenches and latrines for a living, was beaten by the men, who were working at the same construction site.
They assumed that the man had heard what they were saying about the landlord and that the song was dedicated to them. When other people intervened, Sempijja was released and given sh5,000 in compensation on the advice of an LDU, who was present. Ends
