Mamdani Raps US On Iraq Policy

RENOWNED political scientist Professor Mohamood Mamdani has said the United States will not deliver democracy in Iraq, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

Mamdani said the end of the war in Iraq was not an indicator of peace and democracy in the country.

“Saddam is gone but this does not necessarily mean that peace and democracy shall prevail. The US will not be able to deliver democracy in Iraq. This is because power is held by field commanders,” Mamdani said.

He was presenting a paper on the ‘War in Iraq’ at Makerere University on Saturday.
Mamdani said the US attacked Iraq despite the UN inspector’s failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

“There was no evidence that Iraq was still in possession of these weapons. Now that the war has ended, the US cannot justify their attack. The oil was not a significant factor.
This was a political war. Peace was never given a chance. Given the history of all the wars that the US has waged, it is increasingly becoming a threat to democratic liberties,” he said.

He lashed out at the countries which supported the war, saying “these countries are either military or represent military regimes.”
