14 arrested
KHARTOUM – Uganda authorities have arrested 14 Sudanese nationals in connection with terrorist activities in East Africa, the Sudanese ambassador in Kampala was reported as saying yesterday. The Al Rai Al Aam said Ambassador Siraj Eddin Hamid urged Ugandan authorities to set them free if there were no specific charges against them or to deport them to Sudan if they proved to be staying illegally in Uganda.

Terror fought
KAMPALA – The Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers' Association (UTODA) has pledged to support the Government in its effort to counter the looming terror threats in the country. UTODA general secretary Charles Kamya on Wednesday said they were working hand in hand with security agencies to fight terrorism.

Four held
KITGUM – Four Sudan people's Liberation Army (SPLA) soldiers have been arrested by the UPDF in connection with the killing of two Ugandan civilians in cold blood at Aweno-Lamwo county about 70km north of Kitgum town. The UPDF 503 Brigade commander, Lt. Col. Sam Kiwanuka, confirmed the SPLA men had been disarmed.

Ituri fighting
ARUU – Heavy fighting erupted yesterday near the Uganda border town of Aruu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as suspected forces of rebel leader Thomas Lubanga tried to retake the area.

The town, which is less than 20km from Arua town on the Uganda side of the border, is under the control of one of factions which broke off from Lubanga led by commander Jerome. The UPDF's Chief Political Commissar, Brig. Kale Kaihura, said Jerome’s forces had contained the situation.
