FIVE bridges in Kapchorwa district have been destroyed by floods following heavy rains in various parts of the area, engineer Albert Lachawu said recently.

He told The New Vision that the floods had cut off road communication to the eastern parts of the district, hampering the implementation of the School Facility Grant and health unit construction projects.

Lachawu named the affected bridges as Kere and Bukwo on the Kapchora-Suam road, Amanang-Chpkwasta-Kapsarur, Kapkwata-Kwanyiy and Kateror-Kapkoch bridges.

He said they were washed away by floods while others were blocked.

Many roads have been blocked by landslides, hampering transport communication in Kongasis county.

Lachawu said traders and residents could not transport produce to Mbale and Sironko. Neither can they bring to the area essential commodities like sugar.

District authorities have appealed to the Government to mobilise resources to construct new bridges and ensure their periodic maintenance.

Bukwo bridge alone requires an estimated sh120m for repair.
