PERSONALITIES were there including Mayor Ssebana Kizito. The mayor had just pulled off a jig up on the podium with vivacious songstress Halima Namakula that attracted a thunderous applause.
It was the official launch concert of the dynamic duo Menton Krono and General Mega Dee’s latest album Wasi Wasi. Shortly before, Sebaana had officially declared the album launched and pledged sh1m albeit from City Hall coffers.
But when the public implored and funnyman Segawa, the MC, dramatically fell to his knees, pleading with the mayor to top up with his own contribution, in form of a donation Ssebaana paid sh100,000 for a Wasi Wasi CD.
But the revellers had got a bonus — watching Menton Krono and General Mega Dee perform Kampala Nga Mulungi, one of the most popular songs off their Wasi Wasi. The boys later performed songs from all their five albums to the utmost limit.
But at this point, Ssebaana had been the long-awaited guest of honour (Halima had got panicky and called up the mayor lest he did not show up and held the whole show). Now that he was done with his thing, it was time for what brought all those all out that night-the music.
Halima leaped on stage and performed Omusajja Wa Taxi. But she was so stiff and her performance so uninspired, it was no wonder the crowd never stirred. In an effort to mechanically get the audience rolling, she sang Amba.
The crowd was now in gear and ready to go. Enter Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) Sergeant Kifulugunyu. The two jointly performed the (NRA bush) war song Kibonge. Response? Tumultuous!
But nothing close to Ragga Dee, whose performance was preceded by a pledge of sh400,000 to “to boost fellow musicians (General Mega Dee & Menton Krono).â€
His presentation of Nugu was truly breathtaking.
Talking of Ragga Dee, what happened to the rest of the high-profile opening acts that had been promised?
Revellers waited in vein for the likes of Jose Chameleon, Bebe Cool, Bobi Wine, Steve Jean and Emperor Orlando. However, an almost equally thrilling representation from upcoming talents filled the gap all right.
Among these was ex-Shadow’s Angel Bella who, with hip-hop artist Viboyo, performed their popular radio hit No Neda. There were also performances by Ken Wonder (Muvunane), Ronnie K and John B among others.
The night ended thus with a little bit of mixture of Ugandan artistic flavour.
