KAMPALA City Council (KCC) has given companies advertising with giant billboards until May 31 to remove them.

Simon Muhumuza, the KCC spokesperson, said recently that several companies are advertising on very big billboards that are illegal according to district regulations.

“Our regulations say that the biggest or largest billboard should be 72 square metres, but all the big billboards are above that size,” Muhumuza said.

“All the advertising agencies were informed about the deadline. After that, council will be at liberty to do as it wishes,” he said. He there will be no compensation for the removals.

Muhumuza cited Nile Breweries, Uganda Breweries, Firestone, City Tyres, MTN Uganda and Celtel Uganda as among the companies that have these giant billboards in
Kampala.

MTN’s Phillip Besiimire said they have several outdoor advertising agencies which erect billboards on their behalf.

He said MTN does not determine the size and where the billboards should be erected.

He said that he is not aware of the deadline, but said if the advertising agencies were informed, they will handle it.

Celtel Uganda’s George Rutagubya said they have about seven agencies, which handle their adverts.

He said Celtel Uganda does not own sites and could not comment.
