NRM still broad-based

MINISTER OF State for Defence Ruth Nankabirwa has rightly criticised Charles Rwomushana for smearing the name of First Deputy Prime Minister Eriya Kategaya.

MINISTER OF State for Defence Ruth Nankabirwa has rightly criticised Charles Rwomushana for smearing the name of First Deputy Prime Minister Eriya Kategaya.

Rwomushana, who heads political intelligence in State House, vitriolically attacked Kategaya on Monitor FM for having publicly stated that President Museveni should make it clear that he was not seeking a third term in office.

Rwomushana alleged that Kategaya had been persistently plotting against Museveni and was aggressively pursuing power for his own ends.

Rwomushana also blasted Local Government Minister Bidandi Ssali and East African Community Secretary General Amanya Mushega saying that they were trying to mobilise soldiers in the army against Museveni.

Nankabirwa complained that Rwomushana should have internalised political trends before making such public attacks.

It is good that Nankabirwa has spoken out. Rwomushana is out of order in attacking the integrity of politicians who were involved in liberation struggles before he was even born. Definitely there was a lack of respect on Rwomushana part.

More importantly Rwomushana’s utterances do not represent the broad-based character of Movement politics. All Movement supporters hope and pray that this inclusive character will extend into new National Resistance Movement Organisation and that it will remain an ‘umbrella’
organisation even while operating in a multi-party environment.

President Museveni has himself encouraged debate on whether the two-term presidential limit should be lifted. Who then is Rwomushana to attack Kategaya?

Moreover the interim national executive committee of the NRM organisation will be headed by Haji Moses Kigongo with Bidandi Ssali as his deputy. Bidandi’s appointment to this vital post is a clear indication that Rwomushana does not represent mainstream Movement thinking and should therefore be ignored.

Let open debate continue.
