Abid Alam, chairman of Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), has once again appealed for stringent laws protecting consumers from purchasing counterfeit manufactured products.
Alam was addressing manufacturers and business people at the Mbale Private Sector Promotion Centre on Saturday. This was in preparation for the forthcoming Eastern Region Trade Fair (ERTF).
He said UMA was deeply concerned about Ugandan consumers purchasing fake electronic products bearing trademarks similar to the original ones.
“Government needs to enact strong laws protecting trademarks especially of locally manufactured goods,†he said.
He urged Ugandans to support the local manufacturing sector by buying high quality products at the trade fair.
Alam said President Yoweri Museveni is expected to officiate at the official opening tomorrow at Mbale Cricket Grounds.
Over 120 companies, six from neighbouring Kenya, have confirmed their participation. Ends
