A-SIXTY-two year old Austrian man removes his dark glasses, fighting back tears, he bends and kisses a serenely sleeping two-week old face that seems to smile back in response.
The tragic fact is that the 14-day old boy named Lubanga Kene (Only God can) by his rescuers was cut out of his dead mother’s body when she died in an LRA ambush on Gulu-Kitgum road.
Helmut Kutin, the boss of SOS Children’s Villages worldwide, on Tuesday named the boy Kutin and announced that his organisation would soon invest at least US$1.5m (about sh3b) in the construction of a home in Gulu for children affected by Kony terrorism in northern Uganda.
Kutin, who was orphaned at 12 years during the 2nd World War and grew up in an SOS Village in Austria, also kissed the face a two-month-old girl named Aneno Can (I have seen problems) by her rescuers. She was rescued from an ambush scene in Kitgum while still sucking on her dead mother’s breast.
Lubanga Kene Kutin and Aneno Can, now wrapped in new shawls, are cared for by SOS Uganda.
The New Vision saw scores of other children trek daily from their homes in the villages around Gulu town to sleep on the dark and cold streets of the town in fear of Kony’s attacks at their homes.
“ I apologise to you children for the suffering inflicted on you,” he said.
