FRANCO Ojur, a Uganda People’s Congress leaning candidate, has taken the Lira district council chair. Ali Mao reports that Ojur won with a landslide, dragging in the mud two other rivals in the hotly contested Monday by-election. Declaring the result on Wednesday at 2:00pm, the returning officer, Silver Mugyenyi, said Ojur polled 69,943 votes, representing 68.22% from 473 polling stations. On his heel was former district council boss James Obua Otoa who struggled to reap 24,846 votes, representing 24.24%. Levi Okodi brought up the rear with 7,732 votes, representing 7.54%. The district seat fell vacant when former chairman, Dr. Odwe Arago, died early this year. Ojur did not spare his colleagues at his home in Abako sub-county, Moroto county where he harvested 6,332 votes, leaving Otoa with a paltry 194 votes and Okodi with a mere handful of 107 votes. But Otoa swang the table on Ojur in Ogur sub-county, Otoa’s home, where he polled 961 votes, leaving Ojur in the trail with only 34 votes while Okodi was left to count his harvest on his finger and did not go beyond eight votes. By the time it was Wednesday 2:00pm Mugyenyi declared, “Being the returning officer for Lira district council by-election, I declare Franco Ojur the new chairman of Lira district Local Government.†Ends
