ON Tuesday, a housemaid of an Asian man in Old Kampala was forced to swallow tablets which she had vomited out.

Apparently the maid, called Jane, fell sick after she had been paid her May salary. But she sent all the money to her elderly parents in Kiboga.

She spent most of the day in bed and did not do any house-work, because she was feeling weak.

When her Asian boss came back late in the evening, he found her asleep in an unkempt house. He immediately asked in broken English: “What’s problem? Ah, no work done at all! Whole place messed up.”

“But I am sick and I have been down the whole day without any treatment, because the money you gave me I sent it all to my parents,” the maid replied.

“Get in the car I take you hospital,” the Asian boss said.

Jane was taken to a nearby clinicand was diagnosed with malaria. She received treatment and was given tablets to swallow for three days. But when they got home, just seconds after swallowing the medicine, Jane vomited it, right next to her boss.

“You girl, me wasted money, buy you medicine and you vomit it. No wasting my money. Get the tablet. It is still sold. Pick it now,” the Asian man commanded Jane.

She picked up the intact Fansidar tablet hesitantly and swallowed it again before the boss added in a heavy accent: “You not joke with money! Money they don’t joke with it.”
