THE fisheries department last week, impounded immature Nile Perch and Tilapia fish worth over sh7m from two suppliers of Ngege Fish Processing Factory reports James Odong.
Muwanga Ssalongo and one Sekitosi, who were arrested last Thursday at Port Bell landing site in Luzira near Kampala with four metric tonnes of immature fish, are being detained at Kitintale police post and Jinja Road Police station, respectively.
Yasin Matovu, the head of the law enforcement unit in the fisheries department, Entebbe arrested the duo.
Matovu said the impounded fish was measuring less than 20 and 11 inches, the minimum length specified by the law for Nile Perch and Tilapia respectively.
He donated the fish to prisoners at Luzira Prison.
Matovu said the culprits would be charged with being in possession of immature fish contrary to Section 35 (b) of the Fish and Crocodile Act of 1964.
He said the impounded fish would have sold at sh2,300 per kilogramme at the factory price and sh2,000 per kilo in the open market.
Matovu warned fishermen to avoid catching immature fish, saying if caught they would face the courts of law and risk imprisonment.
He said there was enough mature fish in the lakes.
