SIR— The health co-ordinator of West Ankole Diocese would like to respond to the article in The New Vision of June 5, page 4.
It was reported that the Head of Community Health Education Programme of West Ankole Diocese, the Rev Benon Byamugisha, stated that the Church promotes the use of condoms and actually distributes them.
West Ankole Diocese wants to categorically clarify that what the reporter wrote is a blatant distortion of what was said at the workshop.
What the health co-ordinator said was that the Church was not all out to de-campaign the Ministry of Health policy about condom promotion. Instead, the Church was advocating for:
(1) The creation of awareness on all aspects of HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention and care.
(2) Encouraging unmarried people to abstain from sex and for the married to be faithful to their spouses.
(iii) The creation of awareness on the positive and negative aspects of condom use without minimising the need for condom education, especially to the married couples who are HIV positive and for family planning.
(4) Teaching against indiscriminate distribution and use of condoms in an irresponsible manner.
West Ankole Diocese would like to urge journalists to always report facts rather than fabricate stories to suit their own interest.
