FEDERATION of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) secretary Haruna Mawanda sent journalists into laughter yesterday, by stating that he will not hire a witchdoctor for the Cranes.
“We won’t hire any witchdoctor. We have not actually come to that (hiring a witchdoctor) but have decided to educate our boys about the psychological effect of this (witchcraft),” said Mawanda.
Mawanda was commenting about the confusion and jokes that eclipsed the over 200-minutes Uganda-Rwanda match due to juju cries on Saturday. Uganda lost 0-1.
“It is quite difficult (to convince people to live without it) at times. Unless you put someone on the bench to take on a witchdoctor’s roll though he knows nothing about witchcraft, you find that the morale of the boys is down. We are trying to find a way in which we will educate fans and all those concerned that juju does not work in football.”
Mawanda, flanked by his assistant Zubairi Galiwango, during the weekly Nile Special Super League press conference at Lugogo made the federation’s stand clear.
He said that they will target those who do not believe in witchcraft first before taking on those who believe in it, though he anticipated that it will be somehow difficult.
Mawanda also thanked the fans for turning up in big numbers to cheer the Cranes despite the result.
