UGANDA Amateur Athletic Federation presidential aspirant Dan Tamwesigire has cautioned National Council of Sports (NCS) to stop taking sides in the polls due tomorrow at Lugogo.
Tamwesigire alleged that the Lugogo authorities were favouring his opponent Elijah Mushemeza by introducing new delegates. Tamwesigire, instead, only wanted the delegates who attended the assembly that was dissolved in January.
“Anyway, we are not boycotting but we shall assess the situation on the ground,” Tamwesigire said cautiously on phone yesterday.
“There is nothing convincing about the arrangements. It should have been the same delegates” complained the Mbarara District Education Officer.
Mushemeza, a Makerere University lecturer, however rubbished his opponent’s allegations as mere “election fever.”
“For me, I am not worried. I am busy campaigning,” said Mushemeza. “In an election, you either win or lose. It is not life and death,” he added.
Businessman Michael Ezra declared on Wednesday that he would stop sponsorship for athletics because he didn’t trust either candidates.
Tamwesigire said he was best placed for the top post. “I was Mushemeza’s coach at Makerere. So everybody should know that I am more experienced,” he boasted.
Uganda Sports Press Association Chairman Joseph Kabuleta will be the returning officer.
The former executive is also sharply divided.
Sulaiman Habib and Patrick Okanya are supporting Mushemeza while, Beatrice Ayikoru, Okot Omwony and Faustine Kiwa are in Tamwesigire’s camp. Ends
