The Uganda Rugby Cranes have not played an international game since October last year. The Kenyans, on the other hand, have been all over the place. Their sevens side has played in over five international engagements. Will this make them have the edge over Uganda in the friendly to be played this afternoon?
“The Kenyans in recent years have concentrated a lot on the sevens version of the game, while Uganda has arguably the more experienced fifteens side,” a rugby official said. “Uganda has not played as a team for a long time, so it will be interesting to see how it comes out. But do not forget it is a friendly, the real test will be against Zimbabwe next month.”
It has been a bit of topsy turby for Ugandan rugby, as there has been a mixture of sevens and fifteens over the last few months. The fifteens league ended barely two weeks ago, and then the following weekend, the sevens circuit was completed.
The concentration now is on the fifteens, and this game against Kenya will serve as an opportunity to mould the team. But then next week is the annual Safari Sevens tournament in Nairobi.
While Kenya might have a separate sevens and fifteens teams, the Uganda sevens team more or less make up the bulk of the fifteens. Any injuries today will affect the Safari Sevens, and any injuries then will have a definite effect on the Zimbabwe game, barely tree weeks away.
