THE Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) will effective June 16 halt production for over three weeks to overhaul and do repair works at the factory premises in Lugazi.
SCOUL chief executive S.C Khaana said this week the repair works were timely because the factory machines work for specified period of time.
He said the sugar production capacity would be increased from 120 tonnes a day to 140 tonnes after the works.
The company recently increased its factory prices of sugar following the depreciation of dollar and increased fuel prices.
Khaana said the shut-down would not lead to another hike in sugar prices “because Kakira Sugar Works would be re-opening for production.”
Kakira has also been closed down for the past three weeks for repair works. It is now slated to resume operations next Monday.
Khaana said Kakira’s shutdown led to sugar scarcity, naturally pushing the prices up.
He said Kakira’s resumption to production would stabilise the sugar supplies.
SCOUL is subsidiary of the Methta Group of Companies.
The Group employes well over 7,000 casual and permanent workers at their Lugazi town base.Ends
