THE Government is strengthening its law enforcement machinery to catch up with the rampant cases of defilement and other forms of child abuse.
State minister for gender and cultural affairs Sam Bitangaro told children at Madibira Primary School in Busia district recently that criminals who have been abusing children would be dealt with according to the law.
“I want to warn all those involved in child abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence, denial of food, sacrifice and defilement that we are closing in on them,” Bitangaro said.
He was presiding over this year’s Day of the African Child celebrations, where he represented gender minister Bakoko Bakoru.
He said the recently revitalised registration of births in the country was an effective tool for the Government to use in the fight against defilement and other forms of child abuse.
“Defilement cases quite often end in acquittals because the casualties lack birth certificates and their ages cannot be ascertained. Without birth registration, it is difficult to accord the required assistance to children faced with such problems,” Bitangaro said.
He appealed to leaders to ensure the protection of children’s rights by ensuring that all children are registered at birth.
