JAPAN has announced an additional US$3m (sh5.9b) grant for the rehabilitation and improvement of the 7.8km Kampala-Gaba road, reports John Eremu.
The grant agreement will be sealed with the finance ministry in Kampala tomorrow, Tatsuya Miki, the Japanese charge d’affaires, said on Friday.
Speaking at the commissioning of the rehabilitation work on the Bakuli-Wakaliga-Nateete road, Miki reiterated his government’s commitment to helping Uganda and Africa improve infrastructure for development.
“It is a well-known fact that the social and economic well-being of any country is closely linked to the level of development of its infrastructure.
“I am optimistic that this (Wakaliga) project will make a significant contribution, not only to mitigating traffic congestion in the city, but also to strengthening economic activities of the private sector through facilitating the smooth flow of goods and services,” he said.
Works, transport and communications minister John Nasasira commended Japan for the assistance and said work on the Gaba road would commence after the Wakaliga project.
The Wakaliga Road rehabilitation is the second phase of the Kampala Trunk Roads Improvement project and is funded by Japan at a cost of about US$3m (sh5.9b).
The work, to be completed in December, is undertaken by Konoike Construction Company with Nippon Koei and Japan Engineering Company as project consultants. The companies redesigned the Nakawa, Nateete, Gayaza and Wandegeya road junctions.
