THE Uganda government has secured US$2m (sh3.9b) to construct Gaba Road. Finance minister Gerald Ssendaula and Works minister John Nasasira signed the agreement for the aid with the Japanese Charge d’Affaires Tatsuya Miki yesterday, reports Anne Mugisa. The works on the 7.9km stretch along Gaba road, which stops at Munyonyo, will include widening it to seven metres and construction of walkways thereon. Nasasira said the project will also include installation of traffic lights at the Nsambya-Press road (Mukwano) junction and at the Kabalagala-Muyenga junction. He said sh2b had been set aside to pay the people to be affected by the road. The construction of the road is expected to begin in January 2004 after the completion of the Wakaliga Road slated for December. Gaba Road was paved about two years ago as the Government prepared to host the Smart Partnership summit at Munyonyo, which was attended by heads of State from Africa and Asia. Ssendaula said the funds for it were mobilised from the Government’s resources and that there was not much done in the way of construction. Miki said development of infrastructure is integrated into his country’s development assistance policy. He appealed to Uganda to maintain the roads and asked road users to obey traffic rules. Ends
