BRITISH Airways (BA) flights to Nairobi are expected to resume next week, six weeks after it suspended business to the Kenya capital over security fears, reports Steven Odeu.
The move follows the removal of the UK government’s restriction stopping all British carriers from operating air services between UK and Nairobi since May 15.
Ian Petrie, the BA country commercial manager said, “Restriction preventing all UK-registered airlines from operating to Kenya has been lifted and direct services between Nairobi and London will resume with effect from July 3.â€
The bans was imposed amid fears of a repeat of a bomb attack in November 2002 on an Israeli-owned hotel and failed attempt to shoot down an Israel airliner flying out of the resort of Mombasa.
BA, which had operated daily non-stop services between London and Nairobi, resumes with the same schedule and also hopes to lift soon a parallel ban on Mombasa services. Frequency between Entebbe and London was temporarily increased to accommodate some customers travelling to and from Nairobi while the airline was unable to operate direct services to Kenya. BA will now resume its usual flight frequency between Entebbe and London, with BA062 operating three times a week. Ron Lindsay, the BA head of aviation security, said, “The safety and security of our staff, our customers and our operation is always our priority. We would not fly to any destination unless we are satisfied totally it was safe to do so.â€
Services between Nairobi and Asmara, Djibouti, Eritrea, Harare, Johannesburg, Khartoum and Lusaka will also resume.
The ban had boosted flights to Entebbe to nine times a week. Ends
