BONIFACE Kiprop set his third national record in a month in Luzern, Switzerland on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old star clocked 7 minutes 47.16 seconds to finish third in the 3000m race at the IAAF permit meeting. He was beaten by Kenyan Pius Muli (7:44.97) and Moses Mosop (7:45.70).
The Puma sponsored Kiprop shaved off 0.76 seconds from the 7:47.92 record he set during the Primo Nebiola Grand Prix meeting in Turin, Italy on June 6. He also holds the 5000m record of 13:16.02 set at the Ostrava Meet June 13.
This has proved a great month for Ugandan runners, with Dorcus Inzikuru, 21, equalling the 3000m steeple chase continental mark.
Meanwhile, runners from the Michael Ezra sponsored Kapchorwa high altitude camp could command the spotlight today as UAAF hosts its first trial at Namboole.
“They are dying to hear the starter’s gun,” said coach Johnson Kasajja, who has been fine-tuning 26 runners in Mt. Elgon for a month.
The 5000m will provide the spotlight with names like Moses Kipsiro, James Kibet, Isaac Kiprop and Martin Kiplimo.
Kipsiro, who like Kiprop and Kiplimo was a member of Uganda’s world cross-country bronze medal winning team, on Saturday surprised everyone by dipping below 14 minutes at high altitude.
Kipsiro clocked 13 minutes and 56 seconds in the 12-lap race at a Kapchorwa trial.
Margaret Nakintu, Justin Bayigga and Catherine Webombesa, who is making a comeback, are the stars in the women’s events.
Businessman Ezra has offered lunch to all the competitors and is paying officiating officials.
Ezra, has in a sh7m offer, also sponsored the next trial on July 5 and the national championship on August 1-2 at the same venue. The trials are qualifiers for the Abuja All Africa Games.
