BUGIRI — The district vice-chairman, George Ouma Abbott, recently said that during a meeting of the East African Legislative Assembly members, a Kenyan MP had said six landing sites that form Sigulu Island in the district belonged to Kenya but Uganda had unlawfully claimed them.

Priest evicts
BUSIA — A reverend recently evicted over 60 families in Kanjo village, Busitema county, from his land. Witnesses said Were Omulanda, 70, deployed over 30 armed policemen with a grader, which demolished all the houses of squatters on the over 60ha piece of land. Sources said some of the squatters had stayed on the land for over 30 years.

Sh59m lost
KAMPALA — The Central Division has lost sh59m in stolen street lights in the last two years, the division chairman, Charles Sserunjogi Musoke, recently said. He said 236 lights, each worth sh250,000, had been stolen. He said more stringent measures have been devised to guard against vandalism.

Three jailed
KAMPALA — Three men were recently sentenced to 14 years in jail when their crime was reduced from aggravated to simple robbery. Haruna Turyakira, 30, Senona alias Bazibus, 25 and James Kairiutuntu, 26, in 2000 stole Christopher Ssebuzungu’s household property and sh1.55m.
