THE Police arrested a suspected armed thug and recovered two guns and a toy pistol in two separate searches in the city at the weekend.

Also recovered were 59 bullets and house-breaking implements.

Kampala Police chief Benson Oyo-Nyeko yesterday said the recovered guns are part of an unspecified number of illicit firearms in wrong hands that have been terrorising people in the city.

He was addressing journalists during the weekly press briefing.

Simeon Kavuma, a resident of Nsambya West who had earlier been arrested by the Police but was released due to lack of sufficient evidence, was again arrested on Saturday when the Police recovered a gun and a locally-made toy pistol from his residence.

The butt and the barrel of the usually long rifle had been sawn off, making it easy for Kavuma and his accomplices to conceal and transport it on a mission.

“This gun may look short but it is effective and very dangerous,” Nyeko, who was flanked by his deputy, Henry Tukahirwa, said while waving the gun.

“The mere fact that Kavuma modified the gun is a clear indication of his criminal intentions,” he said.

“Why should someone who is not harbouring any criminal intentions modify a gun in such a manner?” Nyeko asked.

“No one has the right to modify a firearm, save for the manufacturers,” he added.
On the same day, the Police, following a tip-off, carried out a massive search in Bugolobi, another city suburb.

They recovered a sub-machine gun and 59 bullets.
