UPCOMING powerhouse Najja High School routed four other schools in their bid to qualify for the 2003 Sprite sponsored annual schools’ basketball tournament.
Najja, which was pooled in group C fired off to a 4-0 record, defeating Aga Khan High School 52-31, Kitante Hill School 44-34, Old Kampala 45-26 before finally acquiring a walkover against Makerere College School.
Kitante and Aga Khan followed pace in group C to obtain second and third place respectively with victories over Old Kampala (69-29) and Makerere College (28-27).
But there was a shock play at the Kyambogo centre when new entrants Ntinda View College pooled in group A with eight other schools defeated strong contenders Crane High 34-27 to surprisingly take third place in the pool.
Despite the defeat, Ntinda View automatically qualified for the next round.
Kyambogo College led group A with 14 points with Kibuli SSS taking second place after a 32-23 win over Green Hill.
Meanwhile, St Lawrence Citizen’s High School and Lubiri Secondary School set pace in group B taking first and second positions before awaiting next weeks’ tighter battles.
In a pool with nine other teams, Mengo Secondary School overcame five teams to qualify for the third and final berth in the group.
The qualification race continues next weekend with the best three schools in each group and the best two losers converging at Eagle’s Nest SS and Lubiri SS courts.
The top four teams will represent Kampala in the Sprite tournament in Fort Portal in September.
