OVER 200 families have been evicted from their homes in Nyantungo sub- county, Kyenjojo district.

The eviction in Mabuga village, Nyaibanda parish, took place recently, following a court order by the Fort Portal Chief Magistrate.

Steven Ndolerire, a court broker, executed the order that has left about 600 people homeless.

The court upholds Abdu Kaija of Fort Portal as the rightful owner of the land.

Houses and crops were destroyed during the forceful eviction, forcing some of the victims, a big number of them women and children, to camp at Nyaibanda Church of Uganda parish.

Others have taken refugee among friends in neighbouring villages.

Many of the victims looked worried, pale and tired.

The district council chairman, William Kaija, said they could not go against the court order.

He said he had requested the chief magistrate to allow the victims harvest their food crops from the gardens to avoid famine.

“We have informed the minister for disaster preparedness, that of internal affairs and the one for lands,” Kaija said.

The district is one of those in western Uganda that have been dogged by tribal land wrangles between the Banyoro, the Batoro and immigrant Bakiga and Bafumbira.
