REALISING that his mission in Teso was impossible, the Lord’s Resistance Army chief, Joseph Kony, last week ordered his forces out of the region, security sources said.
Kasese resident district commissioner Musa Ecweru said the army recently intercepted a radio call message from Kony to his commanders, Charles Tabuley and Vincent Otti, who led the raids in the east, asking them to quit Teso. This followed sustained pressure from the UPDF and former UPA combatants, Ecweru said.
He was addressing Abarilela sub-county residents in Katakwi district during a mass treatment campaign launched by health state minister Capt. Mike Mukula on Thursday.
“He feared the former Uganda People’s Army (UPA) rebels because he knew they are good fighters and had given his rebels a bloody nose,” said Ecweru, who coordinates the ex-rebels in Teso.
“As a result of those losses, Kony was prompted to recall his fighters from Teso immediately,” Ecweru said.
The LRA rebels, who had infiltrated Soroti and Katakwi districts, are reported to have incurred heavy losses, including the capture of their only B10 recoilless gun, which they have been using for ambushing the armoured Mamba vehicles.
The army has also captured several rebels and weapons.
The treatment campaign will cover in Wera, Asamuk Kuju and Abarilela sub-counties in Katakwi.
