Uganda sports scribes yesterday rewarded Linah Bukenya’s impressive performance at the World Special Olympics in Dublin by voting her June Sports Personality.
The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) monthly meeting, sponsored by Katumwa Sports Centre, saw 12-year old Bukenya garner 705 votes against track queen, Dorcus Inzikuru who received 625 votes.
The Makindye Hill Preparatory school pupil won Uganda’s first-ever swimming gold medal at the Special Olympics when she clocked 63:84 in the 50m backstroke race.
Bukenya, who was the youngest athlete in the pool, later compounded her spectacular efforts with a bronze in the 25m freestyle. Uganda ended up hauling 22 medals.
Inzikuru, the designated USPA 2002 Sports Personality, had won distinction by her record-breaking ventures abroad.
The meeting also commended Uganda Cranes, the U-23 Kobs and the Special Olympians for their heroic performances.
USPA chairman, Joseph Kabuleta revealed that Katumwa Sports Centre, the principal sponsors of the gala that crowns sports achievers, had offered England-made track-suits to athletes who will be honoured.
The gala, tentatively set for July 19, is also sponsored by Nile Breweries, Coca Cola and Uhuru Restaurant.
