Internal Security Organisation (ISO) chief Col Elly Kayanja (above) is to camp in |Pader to oversee operations against LRA rebels in the district, security and local sources said yesterday.

Justin Moro and Ali Mao report report that the district LC5 chairman, Edwin Yakobo Komakech, said Kayanja was expected in Pader yesterday.

“Col. Kayanja is coming to make an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation in the district. We have been informed that he will stay for some days and will hold security meetings,” Komakech said.

Kayanja, who had been in Lira for almost a week, had earlier camped in Soroti when the rebels attacked Teso region in late June and promised to organise and mobilise the population to fight the rebels.

Meanwhile, Kayanja has directed the 307 Brigade commander, Major Bazeire, to deploy soldiers at all points through which the rebels crossed into Teso recently.

Addressing UPDF officers, MPs and residents in Lira district on July 8, Kayanja said the loopholes in the army offensive would be filled immediately.

“We have realised our mistake that is why I came to Orum, to find a solution for the mistake and fill the gap,” Kayanja said.

“With effect from today on Tuesday) July 8 the soldiers will be deployed from Lira-Kotido border in Olilim sub-county up to Adwari sub county including the foot patrol to minimise possible ambushes and attack on this road,” he added.

Col Kayanja called for community participation from the local people in the affected areas in Otuke, Moroto and Erute north counties in Lira and Apac districts.
The rebels have fought since 1987.
