SECURITY was yesterday heightened at strategic security points including the Kololo and Kajjansi airstrips, as the American President George W. Bush visited the country.

Security at the Kajjansi airstrip was taken over by a combined force of the Police and the Army, while at the Kololo airstrip, mean-looking soldiers with their automatic rifles mounted on stands took charge and sealed off one section of the airstrip.

A combined security detail comprising the Military Police and Internal Security Organisation was also positioned along Entebbe Road. Uganda House, the Headquarters of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) was sealed off by the Police.

The Kampala Extra Regional Police Commander, Benson Oyo Nyeko, said the overnight deployments, which covered every part of the city, were to counter possible terrorist threats. He also said they were aimed at foiling or breaking up any illegal demonstrations.

“We have virtually covered each and every part of the city with both uniformed and plain clothed Police. we are also closely working in partnership with other security agencies,” he said. Security deployment at the US Embassy in Kampala remained as usual.

Nyeko said by midday that there were no particular incidents that could blight the presidential visit, save for a single demonstrator who was arrested outside Uganda House with a placard and 73 other placards seized from suspected.
