AT LEAST 18 people were killed and 26 others seriously injured when their truck overturned several times at Bamunanika near Mityana town on Saturday.
THE Police said yesterday 13 of the passengers, most of them traders travelling from a market in Kyenjojo district, died on the spot. Five others were reported dead by last evening.
Only one man, Joseph Ruhweza, 25, was identified as the Police were still grappling to obtain details of other victims. The dead included nine residents of Kamwokya parish, Kampala.
Mityana traffic officer Cpl. James Tibaijuka said the dead included 10 men and four women. Three more men and a woman were later added to the death toll, which was expected to rise.
The injured, some with broken limbs, were rushed to Mityana hospital but by yesterday, most of them had been transferred to Mulago, Nsambya and Rubaga hospitals. Tibaijuka said the accident occurred at about 6:45pm, when the front tyre of the speeding Isuzu truck UAE 518N burst.
“The driver was speeding and after the tyre burst, he lost control and the lorry overturned several times. There were skid-marks stretching over 200 metres,†he recounted. Over 40 passengers were aboard. Victims were tossed mid-air as the truck rolled over.
