KASESE Resident District Commissioner Musa Ecweru has said LRA rebels re-entered Teso through Morungatuny in Amuria and some parts of Kapelebyong county on Saturday.
“The enemy, the rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), have re-entered Teso,†Ecweru told Voice of Teso in the morning.
“I call upon all people to be vigilant and watch out for any suspicious persons in your area, quickly report such cases to the security agents,†Ecweru said.
UPDF 3rd Division chief Col. Andrew Gutti said he was waiting for a report from the field. He said an attack in Kapelebyong was suspected to have been carried out by Karimojong cattle rustlers.
“I have therefore asked Major Komakech to give me the details and explain the direction taken by the attackers,†Gutti said.
An official from the Internal Security Organisation described the situation in the affected areas as fluid.
“The information we have received is that the rebels have killed one of the abducted civilians,†said the internal security source. Ecweru, the chief mobiliser of the Arrow Group, a local vigilante force, said the rebels would be repulsed.
Arrow Group comprises former retrenched soldiers and the former Uganda Peoples Army rebels. “This is exporting rebellion,†Ecweru said. “We are not interested nor support any kind of rebellion in Teso,†Ecweru added.
The UPDF had earlier said the rebels had been chased out of Teso. It was, however, discovered that more than 100 rebels were holed up in Agonga and Amootom, about 14 miles north of Obalanga, abducting and looting food. Captives said at Obalanga that the rebels had many guns.
