THE long-awaited tarmacking of Paidha Town Council roads finally began last week, causing excitement among the residents.

The central government has contributed sh200m towards the project while Paidha Town Council paid sh50m.

The Ministry of Works, Housing and Communications is handling it under the rehabilitation of urban roads, JICA II projects.

Initial work began around August last year with a groundbreaking ceremony but work later stalled due to delay in the release of funds by the central government.

According to the town clerk Paidha town council, Jalwiny Silimani, the budget cuts of government departments at the height of Kony’s atrocities in Northern Uganda affected the timely release.

The project was originally planned to end within four months but has now entered the eleventh month.

“Work stalled for four months due to delayed release of the government’s part of funding, until March when they began sending more money. The last amount of sh80m was sent in June and now we are seriously looking at finishing this month,” Jalwiny told The New Vision last week.

He added, “the delayed release has affected the 3kms we wanted to tarmac and we had to go into extra costs for machine maintenance.”
