LOS ANGELES –– Tyson Fight: Iron Mike’s Real-Life Battles Long before there was Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie, there was boxer Mike Tyson and actress Robin Givens.
The couple’s tumultuous relationship was played out in the press. Now a new Fox Sports Net documentary looks at life “beyond the glory,†and Tyson and ex-wife Givens are giving up the goods.
“I’m not a loveable guy so it’s really not hard for people to dislike me. I’m just a decent person. I just want to love everybody but first you have to love me too,†Tyson reveals on “Beyond the Glory: Mike Tyson.â€
“I used to watch the talk show ‘Phil Donahue,’ I grew up on ‘Phil Donahue,’ and you watch those shows and you think of women who’ve been hit and you think, oh my God, what’s wrong with these women?†said Robin.
Robin became one of “those women†when she married Mike Tyson. Making their home on a palatial estate, it should have been a fairy-tale existence. “It was some kind of love, the kind that doesn’t go away,†Robin said.
But the one-year union ended in 1989 amid physical and emotional abuse. Robin remembered: “One time he got pretty bad and he swung a phone at me that I knew was going to hit my face.
“I think I felt the pain before it hit me... Just choking me, vomiting, kicking me, things like that. But he felt bad, he felt really bad afterwards.â€
“You’d think this is a grown man that has all his emotional capabilities in him, together and intact, and it’s not true,†said Tyson.
“He hit me in the side of the head. I went from one corner of a wall, bounced off that corner of the wall to another corner and then I was out. I didn’t think he would do that. I was shocked. I went from being completely numb to being completely embarrassed.
“I remember thinking wow, he must really love me. I remember feeling that, not thinking it, feeling it,†said Robin.
Not only did the boxing champ physically abuse her; there was also the emotional abuse, the lies and the infidelity.
“A lot of times I just hate myself sometimes. I think about some of the things I’ve done to people and some of the ways I’ve hurt people,†said Tyson.
Tyson hurt ex-wife Robin in many ways — most of the time with other women.
“He loves women, yeah, that was a problem for us too, the loving women,†said Robin.
“I remember picking him up one time and his white sweatsuit had lipstick stains on his crotch.
“I was a pig. I’ve never been faithful to anyone I ever met in my life and ... it was not easy for Robin to live with me either. I’m a dirty dog down deep,†said Tyson.
