THE Masaka Referral Hospital is suffering a 50% staff shortage. The hospital superintendent, Dr. Kenya Mugisha, said the hospital, which was designed to have 322 members of staff, currently employs 172 workers.

He said the shortage has affected the labour ward most.

“The staff in the labour ward get tired. They are few and because of the heavy workload, they even develop a rude attitude towards patients,” he said.

Mugisha said because of the improved availability of drugs, the number of patients flocking the hospital is overwhelming.

“We receive patients from as far as Mulago in Kampala. They come for specific drugs that they cannot get in Mulago,” he said.

He said some members of staff are alcoholics.
