FOR Express to prolong interest in a championship race that is fast turning into a one-man battle, three points are paramount against SC Villa.
Express’ ten-point deficit on Villa leaves them under more pressure than their rivals, who can afford the luxury of losing but still stay in the driving seat.
Should Villa beat Express, the trophy could as well be handed over to Micho Sredojevic’s side that has dropped only two points — a first round draw with Express — in the 2003 championship.
Villa is the on-form team going into the match with a record that is almost impeccable.
The Jogoos defence has been breached twice in 1710 minutes of league football this season, and one of those goals was a Moses Muhindo penalty for KCC.
Villa also boasts the sharpest attack with 37 goals in 19 matches.
But if there is any side in the league to stand up to Villa, it’s Express. The Red Eagles are unbeaten at home and are second to Villa in both goals scored and conceded.
Express’ task appears a tall order but Jan Fray, being the optimist he is, believes anything is possible in the unpredictable world of football.
“Anything is possible. Villa leads by many points but if we beat them, we can catch them,†he remarked.
“They have a very organised defence and are hard to break but we can score them.â€
Fray must decide whether to play Andrew Mukasa ahead of Baby Matiyabo, who is yet to rediscover his early season form.
Bana Zidane, effective as a playmaker against Buikwe, returns in the same role behind back-to-form Hassan Mubiru, who has never scored Villa in a league match.
Villa’s Sredojevic, who is without the services of hardworking midfielder Philip Ssozi, can look to everyone on the pitch for goals as central defender Andy Mwesigwa has proved in the last two matches.
Observers think that violence is always a possibility when Villa plays Express and Wankulukuku stadium management has prioritised security.
