Kenya First Lady Mrs. Lucy Kibaki on Thursday visited Uganda women’s effort to save orphans (UWESO) headquarters at Kamwokya, on invitation of Mrs. Janet Museveni.

Mrs. Museveni, who is also the founder and patron of UWESO, briefed Mrs. Kibaki and her delegation on the history, activities and programmes of the NGO.

The organisation’s administrators said UWESO was founded and is run by volunteers on the African spirit of voluntarism and communal work.

Mrs. Museveni said UWESO was founded with a view to supplement government initiatives in handling the escalating number of orphans and destitute children that posed a challenge to the country.

State House said she noted that although UWESO had initially wanted to be self-reliant, the overwhelming number of orphans due to HIV/AIDS and war forced the organisation to turn to donations, among other sources of funds, to enhance their work.

Mrs. Museveni said UWESO has a new role of passing over the life-saving messages and skills they have acquired overtime to the rest of the African continent faced with the same problems.

She thanked Mrs. Kibaki for choosing to visit UWESO to share with them their experience as well as challenges.

Mrs. Kibaki hailed the exemplary work that Mrs. Museveni and UWESO have done in fighting HIV/AIDS and taking care of orphans.

She reiterated her commitment in steering the women in Kenya to emulate the UWESO example.
