MEMBERS of Parliament on the defence committee were on Thursday irked by the House’s failure to avail them with fuel for their trip to Eastern Uganda to assess the security situation there, reports Edith Kimuli.

The chairperson of the committee, Simon Mayende (Samya Bugwe South), said Parliament was not in position to give them the required fuel.

Mayende said Parliament had not passed its budget for this financial year and therefore could not facilitate their trip.

Nasur Okuti (Arua municipality) said the Ministry of Defence should be in position to facilitate them. “When the headmaster of the world was coming here, a lot of funds were used, even to compensate residents to vacate their homes. When they say there is no money for this trip, it beats my understanding,” he said.

Okuti said the ministries of internal affairs and defence, do not facilitate them like other committees are facilitated by the ministries concerned.

“We should meet the minister and
put it blatantly to him that we are frustrated,” he said.

“Parliament should know that there are urgent matters to be considered. What is the reason of giving government a vote on account if we cannot access the funds?” Katongole asked.

The MPs were scheduled to travel for a five-day visit to Soroti, Kaberamaido, Kumi and Katakwi districts.

Recently, the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels attacked the area, killing several people and abducting others.
