UGANDA’s sporting fortunes seem to be in revival with many youngsters winning big accolades for the country.
Last weekend, Uganda still ate big at an East and Central Africa regional Karate event in Nairobi.
Uganda represented by the Goju-Kai Karate club of little known Luzira Secondary School, swept a whopping seven medals, six gold and one bronze.
Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi were the other countries represented, but our youngsters surpassed hosts Kenya who featured up to six clubs against one club from each of the other countries.
The event at the Kasharani stadium was a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Go Ju karate founder, Chojun Miyagi a Japanese.
Fellow homeboys, James Kyewusa (Coach), Moses Kiwanuka (Assistant Coach) and Ramathan Sintuka handled the seven member Ugandan team who over came studded Kenyan team, Highway and Engineer Sprigat and the Tanzanians and Burundians.
Even with pain from injuries during pre-tournament training, and a bout of malaria, the ladies in the team, Ayo Barbara and Joyce Baako fought to the last minute to win a gold and bronze medals respectively.
Overall, Uganda won the Kata and Kumite categories in first position to emerge overall winner in the event held on July 13 and July 14.
Nakawa deputy RDC, Mpimbaza Hashaka, who welcomed the team back from the competitions praised them for a battle well fought and also urged them to study hard so that they all achieve excellence in academics,
“Read very hard and keep away from aids. This will ensure that you live long to enjoy the fruits of your victory,” he said.
The Ministry of Education and Sports encourages schools to include sports on their activities. Physical exercise enhances well-being and improves academic performance.
