EDGAR Luberenga salvaged personal pride by orchestrating a record-shattering performance in the men’s 100m freestyle heats during the on-going 10th FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Luberenga, came sixth from last and was more than 100 places away from qualification but his time of 1:01.61 broke Joel Shota’s standing national record of 1:03.20.
Shota set the record during the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
England-based Luberenga, who had failed to break another record in the men’s 50m butterfly, was in imperious form but couldn’t qualify in the most competitive race so far.
Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) secretary, Simon Mugisha applauded the 24-year old’s effort, saying that Luberenga’s hard effort during training had finally paid off.
“He worked hard to at least set a national record in this competition. This is only the first but I hope that he can break others as the meet goes on,†Mugisha said.
