A new type of flu that is more severe than usual, has hit Kampala and some upcountry places, doctors have confirmed.
At least six senior medical practitioners interviewed by The New Vision separately said larger numbers of children and adults had been suffering from the severe form of respiratory tract infection, which hits harder and lasts longer. No death has been attributed to the severe flu.
By press time the Ministry of Health was making consultations.
The flu that became more common during the past one to two months, affects children more than adults. Some boarding schools had to send affected pupils and students back home.
Doctors suspect it is a new breed of flu virus. “In my experience, I haven’t seen that severe flu before,†said Dr. Gregory Tumweheire, head of the ear, nose and throat department at Mulago Hospital.
The flu usually begins with a running nose and high temperature that may be mistaken for malaria. Later, the patients cough and get chest pain. Sometimes they vomit as they cough.
