A sombre mood reigns over the Nubian community in Bombo, Luweero district, following press reports that their kinsman and former president, Idi Amin (right), is critically ill in Saudi Arabia.
Since Sunday, the members of the predominantly Muslim community, especially the elderly, stand in small groups for many hours, deliberating over the bad news.
Business, however, goes on normally in the busy town near the army headquarters.
Idi Amin, president from 1971 to 1979, belongs to the tribe. Several of his former government officials have homes in the area.
“We are extremely shocked by the news of Amin’s illness .We hope Allah will help him. But in case he dies, the Government should at least allow the body to be returned,” Swalleh Hussein, the LC3 chairman Bombo town said on Tuesday.
Yumbe RDC who is also Nubian, Ahmed Doka, said although Idi Amin committed many crimes, the Government should allow relatives to give him a decent burial.
