SIR— Regarding what the state minister for defence, Ruth Nankabirwa, said during a press briefing concerning Kony’s ways, some people, especially his victims, believe he has supernatural powers. Jokingly, the press has made the phrase a headline in most of their papers and FM radios. To the press, the minister was actually saying that Kony’s methods do not fall anywhere in the political aspect. For instance, Kony captures people and keeps them by terror in his ranks. He tortures them, an act which stops the abductees from escaping. This prompts the people to think that Kony has spiritual powers which stop people from escaping and make even those who escape meet their death.
The impression given was not that Kony needs to be fought by witchcraft, but if those with witchcraft want to do so, it’s okays.
The UPDF is still committed to fighting Kony which is our constitutional obligation despite the shortfalls we experience. The Government has put in place an amnesty law and the peace initiative.
We need all the support to liberate our people.
