A CONSORTIUM of six Church of Uganda dioceses has taken over the ownership of Ndejje University with an ambitious plan of making it one of the most influential institutions in the country.
The university founded over ten years ago by Luwero diocese will now be directly under the six dioceses of West Buganda, Mukono, Namirembe, Mityana, and Central Buganda including Luwero.
Bishop Evans M. Kisekka of Luwero will head the consortium of the dioceses with the task of overseeing their interests.
Bishop Michael Senyimba, the University Vice Chancellor said last Saturday that some of the dioceses had already started major construction work at the campus.
He said West Buganda and Luwero dioceses would construct two hostel blocks to accommodate over 150 full-time female students.
Dr. Kisamba Mugerwa, the minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries laid foundation stones for the hostel blocks.
Prof. Victoria Mwaka, Woman MP Luwero, Ssebaana Kizito, the Kampala mayor, Bishop Michael Kyomya of Busoga witnessed the laying of the foundation stones.
“This university was legally owned by Luwero diocese. But now we have stabilised the ownership and governance of the university and this is a key point in its development,†Senyimba said.
“This consortium has also opened the door for each diocese of Buganda to contribute to the development of Ndejje and make it one of the best learning places.â€
Senyimba added that the university that had been heavily indebted has managed to clear its bills following the arrival of the six dioceses. He said that the university had spent over sh300m in the last academic year on repairs and development.
He also revealed that the university would not enroll students for postgraduate studies because of lack of enough lecturers and professors.
The Council for Higher Education requires that at least 30% of the academic staff of any university should be Ph.D. holders.
