THE education and sports ministry has denied reports that the Government has plans of making the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme compulsory, reports Tolbert Musinguzi.
Aggrey David Kibenge, the ministry’s public relations officer also denied reports that strict measure had been put in place to punish the culprits.
Recently, The Monitor newspaper published a story that state minister for primary education Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire had said the Government would introduce a law to make UPE compulsory and that mechanisms for the enactment of the law were already in place.
But Kibenge yesterday said such a programme to make the policy compulsory was not true and the ministry had not put any substantial proposal to it.
“The reports that UPE was going to be made compulsory are not true. What she said was that, there is no law that can make the policy compulsory,†he said.
