The UPDF have begun arming the Rhino defence unit, a Lango voluntary group, to fight Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.

Lira resident district commissioner Charles Egou-Engwau and the LC5 chairman, Franco Ojur, yesterday said the arming of the local force started on Tuesday.

“We have already armed the force in Dokolo sub-county and the exercise is to be continued in the seven most-affected sub-counties,” Egou-Engwau said.

He said more volunteers were under-going military training in the 14 sub-counties affected by the LRA rebellion.

The rhino defence unit was launched on August 7 by the State minister for health, Capt. Mike Mukula, at the Uganda Technical College, Lira.

Up to 4,000 volunteers from various parts of the Lango have volunteered to join the war against the rebels. The 403 Brigade commander, Lt. Col. Mulindwa, was in charge of the arming exercise.
