SAUDI Arabia has mourned former Uganda President Idi Amin, but Israel said it will not shed a tear for him.

Saudi King Fahad and Crown Prince Abdullah sent cables of condolences to the family of Idi Amin on Sunday, a day after the the former dictator died in exile in the kingdom.

The cables were addressed to Amin’s son Issa, his brothers and the rest of the family who were around Amin when he died Saturday at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in the Red Sea city of Jeddah.

The cables prayed to God to “have mercy on him, give him forgiveness and send him to Heaven”, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

Amin had been living in Saudi Arabia since shortly after his overthrow in 1979 and was buried in Mecca.

Amin’s friend turned arch-enemy, Israel remembered in Uganda by the 90 minutes Entebbe raid in 1977 said they will not cry over Amin’s death.

“We will not shed any tear over the death of this cruel dictator who led his country to catastrophe,” an official told AFP on Sunday, requesting anonymity.

The official said Amin had “collaborated with the terrorists” who conducted the June 1976 hijacking of an Air France plane to Entebbe which had 83 Israelis on board.
