SC VILLA and Express are involved in a tight contest for this year’s NSSL championship, but rampant weather, rainfall in particular, might prove the most defining factor in the title destiny.

Express, who have been the recipients of suspicious glances after two washed-out encounters, must be wearing a cynical smile after Villa suffered the same fate when they visited Kinyara on Saturday.

Villa was expected to maintain their nine-point cushion at the helm but for a torrential downpour in Masindi, which allowed Express to bridge that gap with a 2-1 away win to Akol.

However, the Red Eagles’ victory in Lira was nearly marred again when the hosts protested a penalty.

Express, undoubtedly experiencing a sense of déjà vu by then, must be relieved that FUFA and CECAFA boss Dennis Obua ordered the Akol players back onto the pitch, sparing the visitors’ blushes in the process.

The Wankulukuku side has already been involved in three abandoned matches and a fourth should be a record they would happily do without.

National Football League Committee (NFLC), who had planned for the league to end last June, are now being forced to re-schedule washed-out matches involving the top two with alarming regularity. A new date will be set for the Kinyara-Villa game .

Tight competition is not a preserve for title hopefuls alone as KCC, URA and Masaka LC are tussling it out for that prized third place.

Meanwhile, Ronald Ssesanga’s 45th minute strike gave army side Simba victory yesterday.
